The International Code Council (ICC) is a membership association dedicated to building safety and fire prevention. ICC develops the codes and standards used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. The International Codes, or I-Codes, published by ICC, provide minimum safeguards for people at home, at school and in the workplace. The Birmingham Chapter of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) represents the Birmingham area’s portion of the Alabama Council’s membership of approximately 770 licensed architects, interns and affiliates. Architects join the AIA at the National, state and local levels.The Birmingham Chapter includes; Bibb, Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, Etowah, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lamar, Pickens, Randolph, Shelby, St. Clair, Sumter, Talladega, Tuscaloosa and Walker counties. The Green Building Initiative™ (GBI) was originally conceived as a way to bring green building into the mainstream by helping local Home Builder Associations (HBAs) develop green building programs modeled after the National Association of Home Builders' (NAHB) Model Green Home Building Guidelines. While developing a strategic partnership with the NAHB, an opportunity emerged to bring a revolutionary learning tool developed in Canada to commercial builders in the United States. Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) of Alabama: The ABC is a national association with 77 chapters representing 25,000 merit shop construction and construction-related firms with two million employees. Locally, ABC of Alabama Chapter has over 700 member companies. ABC's membership represents all specialties within the U.S. construction industry and is comprised primarily of firms that perform work in the industrial and commercial sectors of the industry.
